  • The Green Work Course Outline

I just realized I never posted the Green Work Course description. That would explain some things. I believe I assumed people would be able to just read my mind. Since registration is still open (until Friday!), I might as well post it now.

Ok, so the Red Work series of courses takes you through four phases of the Great Work. Phase 1 is the Black Work and Phase 2 is the White Work.

In Phase 3, the Green Work, the magician undergoes a series of initiations into the celestial spheres of the planets and fixed stars. You begin a technique of traveling through the spheres, and receiving spiritual attunements that bring you into harmony with the spheres around you. You’ll meet the Intelligences of the Planets, the Archangels of the 12 Signs of the Zodiac, and you’ll be on speaking terms with spirits whose names won’t be mentioned at this time. At the same time, you’ll be getting deeper into your understanding of who you are in the grand scheme of things in the universe at large.

You’ll also be performing practical magic with these spirits, learning the ways each of the Planetary legions of spirits manifest things here in the material realm. During this stage of my Work, I began manifesting the kinds of abilities that normally get classified as “psychic phenomenon” in the secular world, or the “Gifts of the Spirit” in Charismatic Christian circles.
This is also the phase that involves a lot of crafty talisman making, strange tool creation, and the fun stuff that looks a lot like Hoodoo and Pow Wow if you stare too long. You’ll meet gods and goddesses, angels and spirits, and entities that exist at every level consciously at the same time.

In this course, we’ll be focusing on both the macrocosmic initiations and the physical manifestations associated with each of the Archangels of the Planets and their legions of Spirits.

We will be using the Modern Angelic Grimoire as the primary text book, and we will progress upwards through the spheres based on Ptolemy’s model of the cosmos. I’m thinking we’ll spend about two weeks on each planet, receiving the initiations into the sphere, receiving attunements and instruction in accessing the powers of the spheres in our daily lives, and actually getting stuff from each planet in our physical lives.

The course will include anecdotal insights I’ve gained about creating talismans, and I’ll detail the steps I take to create the planetary talismans in the appropriate metals, or their equivalents. Heat, beat, repeat, and engrave sums it up nicely, but I’ll go into more detail in the course.

Looks like it will be a 17-week course, altogether. The Lesson Plan is as follows:

Lesson 1: Traveling the Spheres – The path of the Hermetic Magician’s ascent through the spheres is described in the Emerald Tablet of Hermes, and detailed in the Corpus Hermeticum. The system I’m teaching in the Green Work utilizes a relatively simple system of conjuration, initiation, and contemplation to accomplish the Hermetic Great Work. This lesson provides a detailed overview of the Great Work within the Hermetic discipline, and the functional tools necessary to accomplish it using the techniques of the Modern Angelic Grimoire.

Lessons 2-8: The Planetary Spheres – One lesson for each of the seven spheres of the planets. These will include a conjuration ritual for each Archangel of the Planet, a sample oration, and tips and tricks on receiving initiations into the spheres. These lessons will include personal experiences with the entities, the skill sets I’ve seen improved by working with the specific entities, and suggestions of manifest things to ask for from these spirits. Each lesson will have an initiatory piece and a practical piece.

Lesson 9: On the 8th and the 9th Spheres – This lesson addresses the Sphere of the Zodiac, and the Sphere of the Prime Mover.

Making Planetary Talismans – An eBook summarizing my experiences in creating talismans in the appropriate planetary metals or other materials. Most of my techniques are crude and primitive, but there will be no sculpey. If you want to use plastic clay, go ahead, the spirits don’t care, but lately I’ve come to hate the stuff.

  • Tick-tock

Tomorrow’s the launch of the Black Work course. If you’ve signed up, please send me the time and location of your birth for creating the Genius name.

The course sign-up site is located at this link.

I’d write up a bunch of salesey stuff, but it’s been a long day after a long night, and I’m wiped out. I’ll repost the outline of the course below, but that’s about all I can muster at the moment.

I’ve broken up the Black Work Course into three phases (eliminating the pretentious names cause it’s too much like an Order, and I got good advice about that idea that I’m taking for once). This is still a tentative outline, because there’s more I want to cram in there somewhere. I can’t seem to think of everything just yet, but this is the minimum of what I plan to cover*:

    * I really need to update this outline, there’s a lot more to it than is listed. As I started developing the materials, more stuff insisted on being included.

  • The White Work Outline

As I said previously, the Supernatural Assistant was moved to the White Work course.

This course picks up where the previous left off. At this point, the student will have gone through the important parts of the Black Work. Along the way, we’ll have performed Natural Magic, Ceremonial Magic, and attained the guidance and begun integrating the harmony of the Genius. Major issues to deal with will have been identified and the process of working through them will already be under way.

So, in Alchemical terms, it’s time to turn up the heat.

If you’ve been through an initiatory system that provided you with the basics outlined in the Black Work course, you’re ready to begin here at the White Work. This Course is designed to put you in direct communion with the Supernatural Assistant. This is a trimmed down version of the original Supernatural Assistant course. Some things have been shifted to the Black Work, so it costs less too.

Tentative Course Outline (Subject to change):
    • Lesson 1: Intro and Overview – Reviews the evolution from the Supernatural Assistant into the HGA over the last couple of thousand years, some general myths vs. realities of having the Supernatural Assistant, and a general understanding of what we’ll be doing throughout this course on the esoteric level of your soul.
      • Homework: Self Assessment – You’ll get a template to fill out that prompts some self-assessment and contemplation that will help you prepare for the process to come.
    • Lesson 2: The Power of Prayer – Includes an explanation of “enflaming yourself with prayer,” the key to building up an ecstatic relationship with God.
      • Field Trip: Visit a Charismatic Christian Church (totally optional if you think you’ll burst into flames when you cross the threshold, or have bad experiences you don’t want to remember)
      • Homework: Daily Face-Time with God. Here beginneth the transformation that leads to attainment.
    • Lesson 3: Can you smell that smell? (a.k.a. Conjuration of the Supernatural Assistant) (Delivered when appropriate) – Includes an analysis of the Stele of Jehu, the Greek Magical Papyri that’s actually called “Acquiring a Supernatural Assistant,” and Crowley’s Liber Samekh. Also includes the conjuration rite you’ll be using.
      • Homework: Solar Initiation by Michael, Archangel of the Sun
      • Homework: Continued daily prayer
      • Homework: Nightly conjuration ritual of the Supernatural Assistant (Should take 10-30 minutes)
      • Homework: Update self-assessment.
    • Lesson 4: Working with the Supernatural Assistant: Practical Applications of your blossoming relationship.
      • Homework: Solar/Saturn Initiation by Michael and Cassiel.
      • Homework: Continued daily prayer
      • Homework: Continued Nightly conjuration ritual of the Supernatural Assistant
At this stage, chances are pretty good that you’ll be going through some serious hell.
    • Lesson 5: The Map of Hell – Personal observations on the landscape of Hell as it manifests in your life; includes some advice and techniques I found were useful in dealing with the layers and layers of crap that tend to come out in the process.
      • Homework: Stay Alive. Keep at the Work. Even when you hate it. Even when you’re convinced it’s all in your head. Even when you think it’s all from Satan. Even when you really want to quit.
    • Lesson 6: The Stairway to Heaven (is Sitting in Hell) – Reflections on the initiatory journeys we’ve been through and preparation for the Green Work.
    Follow up…
    • Lesson 7: Theurgy et Goetia – At this stage, the successful student will have a one on one communion with their Supernatural Assistant. In this final course, I will discuss various possible next steps for the magician. This is a point in the Work where the student can stop and spend some time, as I did, exploring the various applications of the new relationship. I think it’s good to spend a while here Working with the Supernatural Assistant.
      • Theurgy: The Supernatural Assistant serves as a direct manifestation of aspects of Deity that you just don’t get any other way. It is a gate as well as a key to higher powers, and provides understanding of deep mysteries.
      • Goety: The Supernatural Assistant does a lot of the same things that the demons of the Goetia can do. It saves a LOT of time and pain. The relationship you develop with this spirit also provides a level of protection that is very useful if you happen to run into infernal spirits in general, as you’re taking a walk in the park on a sunny day, or dabbling in demonology – you know, the casual demonic encounters one faces in life. This section discusses some lessons learned over the last few years, as well as exploring the practical niceties that come with having the SA as an active and conscious friend in the Work.
  • The Black Work Course Outline

Ok, so the Black Work Course is going to be freaking AWESOME. It’s what I should have come out with first. The SA has been moved to the White Work Course, and Hermetic Merkavah’s over in the Green Work. 8th and 9th sphere stuff is coming in the Red Work Course. Whew. Dude. Lots and lots of work to do.

I’ve broken up the Black Work Course into three phases, naming them as pretentiously as I could. This is still a tentative outline, because there’s more I want to cram in there somewhere. I can’t seem to think of everything just yet, but this is the minimum of what I plan to cover:

    • Hermetic Course Outline

Before I LOSE all my work, I’m posting the high-level outline. There are additional specific tasks under the following bullets that are detailed assignments and instruction.

This will be a paid course. One of the sessions will include the Modern Angelic Grimoire, specifically rewritten for this course. I’m charging for it because:

      • I’m investing a lot of time into the development of this course
      • I will also be grading the work from my students, providing insight and direction as necessary
      • Most importantly, people who don’t pay for stuff don’t do the Work. It saves me a lot of wasted time.

Now, there’s this idiot friend of mine that got all stoned and said that I should NEVER charge for spiritual teachings because if it was RIGHTEOUS, then the UNIVERSE would support me.

For all you people that expect the UNIVERSE to pay my mortgage for teaching you, please feel free to go directly to the UNIVERSE for your education (i.e., fuck off).

There are three basic levels I’m working on:

      The “Novice” Level

Covers the core basics of Hermetic Magic.

      • The Elemental, Planetary, Celestial, and Trans-Celestial Spheres
      • The Goal and Role of a Magician
      • Finding and Using Occult Resources
      • Holy Guardian Angels, Geniuses, and Agathos-Daimons
      • Spirit Conjuration Basics
      • Practical Magic for Every Day Activities

      The “Adept” Level

Covers The Great Work in Practice.

      • Attaining Knowledge and Conversation with the HGA
      • Practical Planetary Magic (Modern Angelic Grimoire)
      • Introduction to Hermetic Merkavah
      • Practical Sub-Lunar Magic

      The “Magister” Level

Covers the “PHD” level of Hermetic esoteric practices that don’t even get really interesting until you’ve done the preparatory work of the initial levels.

      • Hermetic Alchemical Transformation of the Body, Mind, and Soul
      • The Eighth and Ninth Spheres
      • On Becoming a “Power”
      • The Final Transformation

This is all pretty formative, and as I provide the sessions to my test crew, we’ll see how it works out. I’m still working on the cost per session. I expect to be running these in parallel, so at any given time any of you could be taking any level of the classes, assuming you have finished something of the previous levels. In plain English, that means they won’t cost too terribly much.

If you’re already sure you’re past the Novice stage, I’ll take an essay explaining some basic stuff in lieu of the first course, but the things I’m teaching build on the previous Work, and it won’t do a lot of good if you haven’t done some basic initiatory stuff I’ll be covering in the Novice sessions.

    • Lecture Results

So I went up to Thelesis Lodge in PA yesterday and gave a course on The Modern Angelic Grimoire. It went AWESOME. To the people that were there: you were the best audience a person could hope for as a first-time lecturer. The people at Thelesis were warm, welcoming, and damn fine cooks.

Seriously, damn fine cooks. Raymond made this chicken stuff, it was Indian and so delicious. The hoagies were great (thanks Persephone), the cookies (homemade by Steve) were just right, crispy at the edges, soft in the center, and the pie was outstanding (pretty sure that was Amy). I didn’t get to the salsa and pita-hummous, but I meant to. I was pretty stuffed. People paid me to talk. That was cool. After paying the babysitter (highway robbery it was) and tolls and gas (more highway robbery), I ended up losing $10 on the whole deal, but it was worth EVERY PENNY! And then some. Meeting magicians who understood the Christian aspects of my Work was fanulous.

The folks were cool. They raised their hands and asked questions, they put up with me rambling, they interacted well. We conjured Haniel (the time was right, even if the day was wrong) and he popped up, almost everyone felt his presence, and it was just awesome. The folks all got to see how easy conjuring a spirit could be, and the flexibility of the grimoires. I think it was worth their time and money. I hope a few of them will be using the techniques in their work soon.

I talked for like two hours almost. Maybe an hour and a half. My throat was a little sore, and I was standing the whole time. This fat magician isn’t used to that. My wife was able to attend (thanks to the baby-sitter who miraculously appeared last-minute), and she mentioned that I slouched the whole time. Today my back is killing me, so she’s probably right.

All in all, I had a blast. The questions were excellent and thoughtful. There were people from Baltimore that drove up (and got pulled over on the way because they were running late), and I finally got to mee Fr. Ararita from Blake Lodge in DC-Baltimore. After years of correspondence online, he was awesome to meet in person.

Yeah, I’m rambling now, but it was a great time. I didn’t need to be worried as much as I was. When I couldn’t think of a word, they usually knew what it was, between my wife, the linguist (Brian), Ararita, or someone there. It went well.

And Tokyo is in Japan. Not China. You knew that. I knew that. I kinda forgot during the lecture, but I was thinking of other things and that part of my brain wasn’t working right. That’s my explanation.

    • My First Lecture

This Saturday is my first public speaking engagement related to things of the occult nature. I’m going to be speaking at Thelesis Lodge in Philadelphia. The subject, fortunately for me, is the Modern Angelic Grimoire. It’s a topic I’ve covered on my blog for years now, and it’s the system I’ve worked with the most.

Ararita418, whose voice and video page I linked to previously, is going to be there. He and I have been online friends for longer than I’ve worked the Angelic Grimoire. I heard him speak, and the man has polish. He’s OTO, and he’s all professional. The correspondence I’ve had with the leadership of the Thelesis Lodge has been very proper and correct as well. I don’t mind pretending to be polished and civilized at work, but the topics I’ll be covering are near and dear to my heart. As a result, there’s a lot more of “me” that will come through, and “me” drives a camaro, chews tobacco, and spent time in a trailer park in Oklahoma.

      I’m downright nervous.

On the one hand, I’ll be talking to Thelemites who wear real robes during their rituals, who expect more from a ceremony than “Yo, Jesus, you ready? I’m set! Let’s go!” I conjure in jeans and t-shirts. I bathe before rituals… sometimes. My approach is much more earthy than intellectual. These people are paying me to present information that will help them in their Great Work. I don’t want to disappoint them.

But on the other hand, I totally got the results I think they’re looking for. It’s an awesome system, perfect for anyone to attain the highest levels of the Great Work, if they use it. There’s no end to the stuff that can be done with it. I get excited thinking about how much I grew and developed as a man using this system. The insights, the attunements to the different spheres, the relationships I’ve developed with each of the Archangels over the years…

I just don’t want “me” to make the system look bad.

In the final analysis, I know everything came together for a reason. A series of fortunate events, synchronicities, cause and effects, all the earmarks of God’s plan unfolding indicate that I am the right man for the job. So I’ll just shelve the anxiety until I’m about to talk, and then get all aquiver until I get into it.

And I’ll TRY not to come across like the pentecostal charismatic fire and brimstone preacher I’ve always secretly been at heart. Wouldn’t want Legion running screaming from the Lodge looking for a herd of pigs to drown, now would we?

(Anyone interested in coming can contact me for more information. It’s 12-3 on Saturday the 10th in Philadelphia, PA. It’s $15 per person last I heard, prices are subject to change. Also, if you’re local to Baltimore, I’ll be presenting the Trithemian System locally soon too.)

    • Haniel: Archangel of Venus

Last Friday, I performed a conjuration of Haniel.

It went fairly well, and I went through the usual process; I asked if it liked the Spirit Box thing I made, and it said it did. I asked if there was anything I needed to be aware of within my own Sphere of Venus that needed to be addressed, and it pointed out a couple of things. I asked a few specific favors for myself and my friends, and it indicated it would be able to address them. As usual, I asked for any money that it could send my way through its sphere of influence, and it agreed to. I asked to be taken on a tour of the sphere of Venus in a vision, and it complied.

When I asked if there was anything in my own Sphere of influence related to Venus that I needed to address, I saw in the crystal a bunch of little points of light appear. It was like watching a night sky; first you know there are stars there, and you can see the brightest, but then you become aware of even more stars that were there the whole time, and as I watched, they twinkled. I knew as they appeared that each point of light represented a friend of mine, and as I went to each point of light in the crystal, I asked for favors for friends. Healing of a wounded heart here and there, creativity and passion for their art there, and purity and cleansing in other places.

When I asked for money, it was sort of an afterthought, towards the end of the session. The next day my spouse sold a wedding dress (we have managed to accumulate three altogether over the years) for $100. I thought that was pretty neat.

When I asked for a tour of the Venusian realm, I was taken to a park in my imagination. The park is a local Christian gathering place. The lad that owned the farm left it to a bunch of caretakers with the stipulation that the grounds be used for Christian activities. There’s a little pond they keep stocked with fish, there’s a Christian private school on the premises, and in the summer they have a huge Christian day camp that meets there. Weather permitting, every Friday night they show family-friendly movies on a big screen they set up by the pond, and they have a huge pool. They also have acres of corn fields and these beautiful rolling hills. It’s a nice spot. Not what I’d think of as Venusian, of course.

But Haniel appeared beside me, and showed me around. I usually see the archangels as androgynous faces in the crystal. This was different. She was definitely a she, and she showed me around the area. As she did, I saw life abundant. I saw nature in her beauty. Everything was charged and pulsating, flowing through the plants and animals and all the elements like green lightning. Everything was charged, crisp and clear. She smiled at me, and asked if I understood. In that moment, I did.

    • Failures and Successes

Well, yesterday I learned that I can’t always do things perfectly the first time I try them. I know, I should know by now, but still, I tend to think everything I do should work the first time, just because I’m me. Fr. POS assures me that’s too much to ask.

Specifically, I tried to make a Pentagonal Figure of Solomon. I carved a beautiful one out of beeswax, no easy task I assure you. I measured the angles of the star, had each at a nearly-perfect 72 degrees, had all the names in and the symbols, and the Tetragrammaton… It was nice, it was really really nice.

I poured plaster over it to make a mold for the silver. That sort of worked, well enough, but there were some bubbles because I poured it too thick too fast, and just did it … wrong. But when the plaster had dried, I put it in the oven for a couple of hours upside down over a pie pan to catch the wax, which melted out. The mold was close enough to let me get a decent seal and then have a little clean up to do with the dremel tool.

I melted the silver, and poured it into the mold. I don’t have a smelter, so I used a MAP gas torch to melt it. It wasn’t a good, even melt, and I ended up oxidizing a lot of the silver (it turns to powder). Then when I tried to pour it into the mold, it solidified on the way, so I got lumps of silver drops in the mold. It sucked royally. The places where the silver actually landed on the mold didn’t even get a decent impression of the symbols. It really sucked.

Lessons learned: I need more heat, a crucible, and a centrifuge. I need to do the stupid lost-wax thing the right way. And I need to not think I can do everything perfect the first time.

Today, things went much better. I made a talisman for Haniel out of copper. In the hour of Venus, on the Day of Venus, I cut a copper tube, opened it up, and hit it with the MAP torch until it had begun to melt. I like to melt it a bit so that it’s actually solidifying in the appropriate planetary hour, and freezing the “energies” of the moment into the metals.

I put a patina on it using the MAP torch and a quenching process, and then sanded the back of it using a dremel tool flap-sander bit. that was so it would rest on the electrodes of my Conjure Box and make a solid circuit.

I engraved it with the Venus seal from the Magical Calendar (I figure Haniel and Anael are different spellings from different sources, but the same general spirit). I also wrote “his” name in Celestial Script on the seal. I conjured him using the Box and had a good experience. I’ll post about that next.

    • Coping with Difficult Times

Times can tough. Mercury is retrograde, and will be until tomorrow. He’s still going to be “slow” until November 1st. I’ve found that Mercury Retrograde seems to affect my communications negatively, specifically at the very beginning and very ending of the retrograde motion.

To mitigate the effects of Mercury Retrograde, as with any other astrological influence, you as a magician can appeal to the Intelligence or Archangel of the Sphere. You can also make a talisman for the planet when it is favorably situated in the heavens, and then tap into that power when the planet goes retro, or is combust, or whatever.

Last week, when I needed to communicate clearly with multiple Intelligences of multiple spheres, I took advantage of the placement of Mercury in the heart of the Sun. The boost of the solar forces overcame any negatives caused by Mercury’s retrograde motion, and as a result, the communications were clear and crisp. I was fortunate in the timing there, it wasn’t planned out or anything.

Another way to mitigate negative influences is through communion with the Intelligence of the Sphere. I use the Archangels of the Spheres as assigned by Trithemius in the Art of Drawing Spirits into Crystals. Today is Wednesday, Mercury Day, and in the hour of Mercury I will be using a talisman I made last year when he was dignified. I’ll be conjuring Raphael here in a couple minutes, mostly to get the effects of Mercury’s transition from Retro to Direct smoothed out. I’ll also ask what might be going on in my own sphere of influence under the influence of Mercury that needs to be checked into. Sort of a Status Report from the VP in charge of Mercury.

I’d use the Box I made, but I don’t have a metal Mercury Talisman. I need to make one. It should be made out of Pewter, since pewter is a mercurial blend of metals. It’s also soft and easy to work with, and has a low melting point. Brass, bronze, or other mixed metals take on the properties of Mercury as well, according to Aaron Leitch. I trust him, he’s a veritable gold mine of information.

If they’re interesting, I’ll post the results later.
