I am in the process of creating an Orphic Zeus Cult based on the Derveni Papyrus, described as “a text that includes commentary on Orphic verses, dating back to approximately 340-320 BC” by Academia.edu. (Specifically, I am working from the paper “The Derveni papyrus. Many questions and some answers” written by Alberto Bernabé. Please refer to these links for more information about the source materials.)
Purpose of a Cult for Magicians
The Orphic cosmology presented in the Derveni Papyrus explains what we are and what we are doing with the universe in the first place. When you understand what the universe it, our place in it becomes shockingly obvious, and we can understand why magicians have power, why spirits respond to us, what the purpose of doing magic is, and how to improve our abilities to materialize our lives. The initiations into the cult provide:
- A revelation of your true power, a power hidden from you by dark forces that we can restore to you by letting you in on the secret
- A method of reclaiming this power
- A path to mastering this power
- The wisdom to use it effectively
The point of the Zeus Cult is to make you an empowered and efficient magician.
Daily Mantra
I’ve never been a proponent of mantra until recently. My wife is in Jason Miller’s Sorcery of Hekate, and performs a daily mantra as part of that work. I have seen first hand how potent this can be as a practice for magicians.
It provides daily health benefits by toning and strengthening the Vagas nerve, it reinforces the Mystery of the Unity of yourself and your Source, and you can work with it specifically to manifest whatever your current magical projects might be, by visualizing your sigil coming from the Mind of Zeus, going to the Seven Governors and the rest of the Middle Managers, and then out to manifest as your daily experience. It’s a manifestation engine, on top of everything else.
The Zeus Cult Mantra
In the Derveni Papyrus, we learn that Zeus the king of Olympus, after all the things we learn about in the regular myths, became troubled in his dreams, and sought an oracle from Nyx. She confirmed his destiny was to consume the Orphic Egg of Phanes, and become the Demi-urge, which he proceeded to do, and in that moment the universe collapsed into his belly, and from within himself, he re-grew the universe as we know it now, with the other gods and himself emerging from his shoulders, and the forests and mountains, and the lovely rivers.
From the Papyrus we learn that in that moment, Zeus became the Source, the root of all, the “Head” or Kephale of all. He became all the things in the middle as well, the Mesos, the forces and beings and gods and spirits and entities and selves that create and interact within the materieal world, including Gods, Spirits, Angels, Demons, and Magicians, as well as the other Humans and other folks on the planet, both in and out of bodies. And he became the physical world, the spirit in which we live and breathe and have our movement, and all the physical things in it, he became Pantokrator, Zeus the All-in-All.
Zeus the Head, or Root. Zeus the Middle, or “all the unseen forces and beings that reside in matter experiencing its waxing and waning including us.” Zeus the All in All, or just … everything.
In greek this is “Zeus ho Kephale, Zeus ho Mesos, Zeus ho Pantokrator.” This has become my daily mantra, and I am sharing it with anyone interested.
