The Genius and the Evil Daimon

A guide to determining the names of these spirits, and the means of conjuring them.

Determining the Name of your Genius and Evil Daimon

We’ll be determining the name of your Genius and Evil Daimon using the technique discussed in Agrippa’s Third Book of Occult Philosophy.

You will need:

The degree and sign of your Sun, Moon, Ascendant, and Part of Fortune. These are derived from your Natal Chart.
The sign and degree of your Syzygy. The Syzygy is the location of the Moon on a chart of the exact time and date of the previous New or Full Moon to your birth day. If a Full Moon is closer, you run the chart for the date and time of the Full Moon. If a New Moon is closer, run the chart for the date and time of the New Moon. Note that the exact time of the New or Full Moon is required for an accurate letter.

Getting the Names

The first thing you’ll need is the Natal Chart. It’s very important that you have the right date and time of your birth. This is pretty easy if your parents are alive, but if not, it’s usually on your birth certificate. Unless, like me, you were born in Indiana, or some similar place. For some reason they don’t put the time on the birth certificate. I just have to trust my mom.

If you’re not sure of the time of your birth, don’t try to fudge this. Have a decent astrologer get you a rectified chart and Syzygy value. I’ve performed the conjuration ritual with the wrong name, and all you get in the scrying medium is a vacuous void that echoes back at you when you call the Spirit’s name. I eventually had to contact the Archangel Michael and ask him to bring forward the appropriate Genius, who then made a way for the correct time and date to be available for getting the Natal Chart.

When you get all the information you need, get your Natal Chart. From an example chart, we have the following:

Sun – 14.38 degrees Leo
Moon – 5.05 degrees Aquarius
Ascendant – 7.97 degrees Aries
Part of Fortune – 17.3 degrees Libra

Next we’ll need the Syzygy. For this chart, the nearest Full or New Moon was a New Moon the same evening. The Syzygy value is the Moon’s location on the chart for that New Moon: 6.18 degrees Aquarius.

Plugging the values into the tables (rounding up to the next degree to accommodate the minutes of each degree) gives us the name Gimmel-Resh-Chet-Taw-Shin, which I would try to pronounce Ga-rech-e-tash. In the Celestial Script it looks like this: — in square Hebrew, גרחתש.

Conjuring the Genius

The following ritual can be used to conjure the Genius, or modified to conjure the Evil Daimon. It is not advised to conjure the Evil Daimon without first establishing conversation with your Genius. Or even after that.

Required Tools

To perform this ritual, you will need the following tools:

Table of Practice
Wand
Dagger or Sword
Scrying Medium (Crystal Ball, Spirit Mirror, Bowl of Salt Water or Holy Water)
Lamen of your Genius
Incense (Frankincense, Abramelin, Cinnamon, or something Solar work best.)

The Setup

Prepare the location you intend to perform your ritual. You will need a flat surface to place the Table of Practice and your scrying medium on. You’ll want to be seated comfortably. A table or desk works well, or you can sit on the floor with the scrying medium on the Table of Practice in front of you. Ideally you will be facing East, towards the rising Sun.

Place the Table of Practice in front of you, with Michael in the East. Place the scrying medium in the center of the Table of Practice. Place the Incense and the Dagger/Sword to the West of the Table of Practice, and the Wand to the East. Place the Lamen to the East of the Table of Practice until you’re ready to put it on (see ritual below).

Consecration of Ritual Space

Stand facing the East with the dagger or sword in your hand. Point it in the general direction of the ground a few feet away from your feet. Turn clockwise tracing an imaginary circle while you say:

“In the Name of the True Father, Source of all that exists, in the Name of the Logos, the Holy Word of the Father, and in the Name of the Spirit of God within, I consecrate this ground for my defense.”

Be seated and place the dagger or sword to the West of the Table of Practice.

Consecration of the Scrying Medium

Pick up the Wand. Touch the edge of your scrying medium with the tip of your Wand and say:

“Oh inanimate creature of God, be sanctified and consecrated, and blessed to this purpose, that no evil fantasy may appear in you; that every spirit that appears within you may be constrained to speak intelligibly, and truly, and without the least ambiguity, for Christ’s¹ sake. Amen.”

Return the Wand to the East of your Table of Practice.

Consecration of the Incense

Then place the incense burner next to your Table of Practice and light the charcoal and sprinkle incense on it, or light the incense stick and say:

“I conjure thee, oh thou creature of fire! by him who created all things both in heaven and earth, and in the sea, and in every other place whatsoever, that you cast away every phantasm from you, that no hurt whatsoever shall be done in any thing. Bless, oh Lord, this creature of fire, and sanctify it that it may be blessed, and that you may fill me up with the power and virtue of their odors; so neither the enemy, nor any false imagination may enter into this space; through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.”

Conjuration of the Genius

Place the Lamen around your neck, over your heart.

“Thou Spirit {name}, I conjure you in the Holy name of God Eloha Vaudahat, In the Name of the Logos, in the Name of the Holy Guardian Angel. Come now to this place and appear before me, speak with me, commune with me that I may have the benefit of your direct guidance.

You, oh {Spirit Name}, who were one with Logos at the dawn of time, who are Logos to me now, you who created heaven and earth, who has watched over me from the moment of my birth, who has called me to perform this ritual here and now, I conjure you to appear before me. I am {your name}, child of {mother’s full maiden name}. You have called me and I am here. You have led me to this place, brought about all that has transpired in my life to be here calling to you now. Come now and appear before me, in the name of God Eloha Vaudahat I conjure you, appear before me now.”

When the Spirit appears, speak with it, ask it whatever you will.

Some good first topics to cover when you first meet your Genius are:

Is there another name you’d like to be known as?
Is there a seal or symbol you want me to incorporate into your Lamen?
What should my next step be to acquire Knowledge and Conversation with my Holy Guardian Angel?
Will you use dreams to communicate with me, and help me to remember them consciously when I awake?

When finished, thank it for coming and ask that it return when you call it by name. I like to say:

“You great and mighty spirit, as you came in peace and in the name of the ever blessed and righteous Trinity, you may now depart in this same name, and return when I call you in his name to whom every knee bows down. Fare well, (spirit name); peace be between us, through our blessed Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.”

If you’re a heathen, you’ll probably want to modify it accordingly.

The generator draws your Lamen with the name of your Genius already written in, ready to print. A blank Lamen is below in case you want to print or cut it out and write the name in yourself. Remember you’re writing in Hebrew, so write the letters from right to left.

On your Natal Chart, find the degree of the sign the Sun is located in. Find the sign and degree in the table below. Repeat for the Moon, the Ascendant, the Part of Fortune, and the Syzygy. Then read the corresponding letters for the Genius and the Evil Daimon. When complete, you will have the five-lettered names of your Genius and your Evil Daimon.

Round up to the next degree to accommodate the minutes: 14°38′ Leo is read as the 15th degree of Leo (why). The letter of the Genius is above, the Evil Daimon below.

Of finding out of the names of spirits, and Genius’s from the disposition of Celestiall bodies.

The ancient Magicians did teach an art of finding out the name of a spirit to any desired effect, drawing it from the disposition of the heaven; as for example, any Celestiall Harmonie [harmony] being proposed to thee for the making an image or ring, or any other work to be done under a certain constellation; if thou will finde out the spirit that is the ruler of that work; the figure of the heaven being erected, cast forth letters in their number and order from the degree of the ascendent, according to the succession of signes through each degree by filling the whole circle of the heaven: then those letters which fall into the places of the Stars the aid whereof thou wouldest use, being according to the number, and powers of those Stars, marked without into number, and order, make the name of a good spirit: but if thou shalt do so from the beginning of a degree falling against the progresse of the signes, the resulting spirit shall be evil.

By this art some of the Hebrew and Caldean [Chaldean] masters teach that the nature, and name of any Genius may be found out; as for example, the degree of the ascendent of any ones, nativity being known, and the other corners of the heaven being Coequated, then let that which had the more dignities of Planets in those four corners which the Arabians call Almutez, be first observed amongst the rest: and according to that in the second place, that which shall be next to it in the number of dignities, and so by order the rest of them, which obtain any dignitie [dignity] in the foresaid corners: this order being used, thou maist know the true place, & degree of them in the heaven, beginning from the degree of the ascendent through each degree according to the order of the signs to cast 22. of the letters of the Hebrews; Then what letters shall fall into the places of the aforesaid Stars, being marked, and disposed according to the order found out above in the Stars, & rightly joyned [joined] together according to the rules of the Hebrew tongue, make the name of a Genius: to which, according to the custome, some Monosyllable name of Divine omnipotency, viz. El, or Iah is subjoyned. But if the casting of the letters be made from an angle of the falling, and against the succession of signs, and the letters which shall fall in the Nadir (that is the opposite point) of the aforesaid Stars, be after that order as we said, joyned together, shall make the name of an evil Genius.

But the Chaldeans proceed another way; for they take not the Almutez of the corners, but the Almutez of the eleventh house, and do in all things as hath been said. Now they finde out an evil Genius from the Almutez of the angle of the twelfth house, which they call an evil spirit, casting from the degree of the falling against the progress of the signs.

There are also the Arabians, and many others, and some Hebrews, who finde out the name of a Genius by the places of the five Hylegians, and making projection alwayes from the beginning of Aries, and the letters being found out according to the order of Hylegians with the Astrologers, being reduced into a known order, and being joyned together, make the name of a good Genius: but they draw the name of an evil Genius from the opposite Hylegian places, projection being made from the last degree of Pisces against the order of signs.

But other some do not take the places of Hylegians, but the places of Almutez upon the five Hylegians making projection from an Horoscope, as abovesaid: and these names being thus distributed according to the proportioned numbers to the Starry account, compacted or joyned, and changed letters, although unknown in sound, and significative, we must of necessity confess may do more by the secret of the chiefest Philosophy in a magick work, then significative names, whilest the mind being astonished at the obscurity of them, and deeply intent, firmly believing that something Divine is under it, doth reverently pronounce these words, and names, although not understood, to the glory of God, captivating himself with a spirituall affection of piety, in the obedience of him.
